How do I convert a STEP file to GLB?

Drop your .step or .stp file into the converter, choose the mesh quality, then click “Convert to GLB”. The model is shown in 3D and you download the GLB. Works with STEP files exported from Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, CATIA, Creo, Onshape, Solid Edge or FreeCAD.

Is my STEP file uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser (WebAssembly): your STEP file never leaves your computer. Only if you choose the VR headset preview is the converted GLB (never the STEP) uploaded temporarily, then deleted after 24 hours.

How do I view a CAD model in virtual reality (Meta Quest) or augmented reality?

After converting, click “View in my VR headset”: you get a 6-digit code to enter at arviewer.philiprivard.com/q in the headset browser. On a phone, scan the QR code to place the model at real scale in your room, in AR, on iPhone or Android.

What file size is supported?

Large assemblies are supported: above 20 MB the file is converted part by part, in parallel (tested with a 64 MB STEP assembly). For AR on phones, aim for a GLB under 25 MB using Draft quality.

What is a GLB file?

GLB is the binary version of glTF 2.0, the standard 3D format for the web. It opens in AR viewers (Android, iPhone via model-viewer), Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine, three.js and most 3D platforms.
